The European Union's defense policy should be aimed at adapting to new challenges and modern security threats. Ukraine, which aspires to become part of the EU, has already started producing weapons. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a press conference at the forum "Ukraine. Year 2024" on Sunday.
Commenting on the situation when the European Union has only now started to voice initiatives on the creation of a new position of the European Commissioner for Defense, and there are difficulties with the provision of promised munitions to Ukraine, the Head of State noted that bureaucracy in certain institutions in the EU, as in any union or alliance, is a complex matter. But today there are new technologies and approaches, and everyone needs to reboot.
"For example, the issue of a million artillery shells for Ukraine has also been raised for a long time on various platforms of the European Union. So far, we have not received this million. We have received about 30%, although at the last meeting Mr. Borrell told me that he would do everything to ensure that we have this artillery by the end of this year. We are not just waiting, we are producing the weapons ourselves. It is not enough – we realize that. But we have certain contracts, we are counting on all these volumes," he said.
At the same time, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine wants to become a full member of the European Union.
"For us, this is a historic choice. A geopolitical choice. First of all, it is the choice of our people. And no one will be able to change this course. Russia tried to do so, but failed," the President said.
