If MPs sabotage the adoption of a law to prevent the influence of oligarchs, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy will put the issue to an all-Ukrainian referendum. The Head of State announced this during a conversation with journalists in the framework of the All-Ukrainian Forum "Ukraine 30. Ecology".
“If I feel that I have a confrontation not only with big business, which is unwilling to get rid of this status (oligarchs - ed.), and if I see the influence of these people on the Ukrainian parliament regarding non-voting, "disrupting", changing, postponing this bill, I will need support. And if I do not have the support of the parliament, I will have the most important support - society. Then I will put the issue of oligarchs to a referendum," the President explained.
At the same time, the Head of State stressed that he did not consider the issue of oligarchs worth putting it to a referendum, as the instrument of direct democracy should be used to resolve fundamental and really important issues.
"I would not like the issue of the law on oligarchs to be fundamental for the people. I believe that we can more or less pass (this issue - ed.) in the parliament, and all deputies, especially all majority deputies, for whom people voted, must support this law," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The President noted that all parties had the time and opportunity to get rid of the oligarchic influence, but they did not use this opportunity.
"I do not want us to have oligarchs. Moreover, the problem is not only in the management of the economy or the influence on the policy of Ukraine inside, it is also a great political spoiling of Ukraine's image abroad. That's why I know that during my term we will get rid of all the oligarchs. I gave such a word, and I am going to do it," the President summed up.
