On International Women's Day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented high state awards and conferred honorary titles upon women who distinguished themselves with selfless work and bravery in the defense of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ceremony took place at the Mariyinsky Palace in Kyiv in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is on a visit to Ukraine.

"The protection of the rights and respect for every person is what the freedom of nations and peace between them are based on. Unfortunately, now is the time when real threats to freedom and, consequently, to international stability are the greatest in many decades," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The President emphasized that the lives of millions of families are now being destroyed because of the aggressor's sense of impunity.

"In the XXI century, we have to fight again for what seemed to have already been gained: for equality, respect, women's right to education and work, for the right of every nation to happiness for its children," he said.

The Head of State emphasized that the free world needs strength, unity and determination to protect common values as never before.

"Today we thank our women who are fighting, caring, working for peace for Ukraine, for the protection of our lives, our freedom, our people. I am glad that today we have such an opportunity - in the presence of Mr. Secretary-General of the United Nations - to recognize with state awards and to thank the Ukrainian military, employees of the medical system, the State Emergency Service, Ukrzaliznytsia, and the Ukrainian post office. Those who are defending Ukraine. Those who help Ukrainians," the President emphasized.

The Head of State awarded orders and medals for bravery and selflessness in the defense of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for conscientious and impeccable performance of their professional duties to women servicemen and representatives of civilian professions, one of whom was awarded posthumously.
