President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the Law of Ukraine "On a special procedure for removing the President of Ukraine from office (impeachment)"№ 39-IX approved by the Verkhovna Rada on September 10, 2019.
The law defines the authority, procedure for the establishment and operation of a special temporary investigative commission. It will investigate the crime committed by the President of Ukraine, including treason.
The document also regulates the legal status of the special prosecutor and special investigators.
In addition, the law determines the procedure for early termination of powers of the President of Ukraine if he was removed from office due to impeachment.
The adoption of the law created the legal preconditions for the impeachment procedure. It also restores the system of checks and balances provided by the Constitution of Ukraine.
The amendments to the legislation will provide the necessary openness and publicity to the parliamentary investigation into the circumstances of the crime committed by the President.
