Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the law abolishing parliamentary immunity

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Law of Ukraine "On Amendments to Article 80 of the Constitution of Ukraine on the Immunity of People's Deputies of Ukraine" № 27-IX approved by the Verkhovna Rada on September 3, 2019.

According to the law, article 80 of the Constitution of Ukraine has a new wording, which does not contain provisions that MPs are guaranteed parliamentary immunity and cannot be held criminally liable, detained or arrested without the consent of the Verkhovna Rada.

At the same time, according to the new wording of article 80 of the Basic Law, MPs are not legally responsible for the results of voting or their statements in the parliament and its bodies, except for liability for insult or defamation.

The law is to come into force on January 1, 2020.
