Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the the President of the European Council Discussed Strengthening Sanctions Pressure on Russia and Bolstering Ukraine’s Position for Peace

In Kraków, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President of the European Council António Costa.

The Head of State expressed gratitude for today’s decision by the EU to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months.

"We need to continue putting pressure on Putin, and sanctions are one of the truly powerful tools. I would like to discuss with you how to strengthen this sanctions pressure," Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

One of the key topics of the meeting was the anticipated 16th EU sanctions package against Russia. Ukraine is counting on strong decisions that will further limit the aggressor state's ability to continue the war.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and António Costa also focused on military assistance. The Ukrainian President emphasized that developing Ukraine’s defense industry – especially the production of drones and long-range weapons – is a priority that will strengthen our country’s position in achieving a just and lasting peace.

The two leaders discussed potential funding sources for Ukraine’s domestic weapons production, which is both fast and cost-effective, including the use of frozen Russian assets.

Special attention was also given to preparations for the informal meeting of EU leaders convened by António Costa and scheduled for February 3. Ukraine is counting on the launch of new strong ammunition supply initiatives there.

The Head of State also emphasized that it is important for Ukraine that Europe be a full-fledged participant in any future negotiations on restoring a just peace.

Additionally, Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine aims to open several negotiation clusters on EU accession in the first half of this year and is counting on the support of the President of the European Council in ensuring unanimity among member states.

António Costa emphasized that a just and lasting peace is necessary not only for Ukraine but also for all of Europe.

"We will stand with you for as long as it takes," concluded the President of the European Council.
