Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Iryna Mudra opened a two-day expert roundtable discussion on the need for legislative changes to ensure fair accountability for international crimes.
More specifically, judges, prosecutors, investigators, lawyers, academics, people's deputies, as well as experts from both international and Ukrainian non-governmental organizations paid special attention to the issues requiring regulation in relation to the Rome Statute.
“Changes in the system for investigating international crimes require coordination among all participants in the process of restoring justice for Ukrainians. That is why it is crucial to agree upon and formulate a unified, common approach to the development of these changes – one that incorporates international standards as well as our unique experience and best practices,” Iryna Mudra emphasized.
As a result of the discussion, participants decided to develop a comprehensive approach to the implementation of the Rome Statute. It should be based on the priorities of the authorities within the Ukrainian criminal justice system and the need to ensure fair trial standards.
