The negotiations between Ukraine and Portugal were focused on the development of the partnership between the two countries and the support of the people. This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy after a meeting with Prime Minister of Portugal Luís Montenegro in Lisbon.
The Head of State expressed his gratitude for the support of Ukraine and Ukrainians. He emphasized that the Ukrainian community is one of the largest in Portugal.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also noted that the signed Security Agreement defines specific areas of defense and political cooperation.
“I would like to emphasize the participation of Portugal in defense initiatives that help us withstand Russian strikes, as well as the work on training our pilots for the F-16s. I am also grateful for the support to Ukraine in European and Euro-Atlantic institutions,” the President said.
During the meeting, the parties discussed preparations for the Peace Summit and steps that could bring the end of the Russian invasion closer.
“We expect different nations, different states, all continents at the Peace Summit, so that everyone can show their leadership in protecting common values and peace,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Luís Montenegro emphasized that the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal will attend the Global Peace Summit.
“Portugal will continue to help in all efforts, with contacts at all levels to encourage more countries to participate in this meeting,” he said.
The Prime Minister stated that Portugal will always support Ukraine and condemn Russian aggression.
Luís Montenegro also mentioned Portugal's participation in the Artillery Coalition. The country also has plans to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
