The visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Ukraine on August 22 confirms that security issues in Europe cannot be resolved without President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This was stated by Press Secretary of the President of Ukraine Serhiy Nykyforov at a briefing on Wednesday at the President's Office.

"Angela Merkel and Volodymyr Zelenskyy will discuss how Germany will guarantee the fulfillment of its commitments in case Russia tries to abuse its monopoly position after the launch of Nord Stream 2," the Press Secretary of the President of Ukraine said.

According to Serhiy Nykyforov, the President of Ukraine and the Chancellor of Germany will definitely talk about the situation in eastern Ukraine and how to revive negotiations on ending the war in Donbas.

Bilateral relations will also be on the agenda, as Germany is a key political and economic partner of Ukraine in Europe, in particular in the fields of trade, industry and energy.

"The potential for strengthening these relations is huge. They will talk about it as well,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Press Secretary said.

Serhiy Nykyforov stressed that Angela Merkel's visit once again proves that "there are no discussions about Ukraine without Ukraine".

"And that the most important security issues in Europe cannot be resolved without direct negotiations with the President of Ukraine," he said.
