President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Venice Commission with a request to assess the constitutional situation caused by the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine of October 27, 2020 and to provide an opinion on the state of anticorruption legislation after its adoption. The corresponding letter was sent by the President of Ukraine to President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio.

In the letter, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expresses his sincere gratitude to Gianni Buquicchio for the long-term support of Ukraine in implementing structural reforms and bringing Ukrainian legislation in line with European standards.

The President notes that the recent decisions of the CCU regarding the basic legislation for the anticorruption infrastructure of Ukraine have led to a serious constitutional crisis.

"The Ukrainian government is determined to resolve it and restore the legislative mechanisms to prevent and combat corruption," the President stressed.

In particular, Volodymyr Zelenskyy urges the Venice Commission to provide an opinion on the approval of a decision by the judges of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine in the event of a possible conflict of interest, on the CCU's compliance with the procedure of case review and decision-making, in particular on its validity and compliance with the constitutional submission.

The President calls for an opinion under the expedited review procedure given the urgent need to find a balanced solution to overcome the constitutional crisis.

"We highly appreciate the expert assistance of the Venice Commission and look forward to continuing close cooperation," the President noted in a letter.
