President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant, where he received a briefing on the construction progress of the third power unit and held a meeting on the energy sector.
“As you know, nuclear energy is the backbone of Ukraine’s electricity supply – it ensures we have light, power, and life. And that is crucial. I believe it has, in many ways, helped preserve our state, especially through these three difficult winters,” the President stated.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, completing the construction of two additional power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP will provide Ukraine with an extra 2 GW of electricity – roughly the amount currently lacking due to Russian attacks.
“These 2 gigawatts mean stable electricity. And in peacetime – which will come, no doubt – it will also support businesses. I believe the strain on them will be lower than it is now. Today, they help keep electricity costs not so high for people,” he emphasized.
Once completed, the Khmelnytskyi NPP will become the largest in Europe, capable of generating a total of 6.4 GW of electricity. This will not only ensure affordable electricity prices for Ukrainians but also allow the country to export power abroad and create new jobs.
Additionally, during his visit to the Khmelnytskyi region, President Zelenskyy held a meeting on the energy sector. Minister of Energy German Galushchenko briefed attendees on the prospects of Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector and the expected benefits of completing the two power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP.
