President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence that after the arrest of suspects in murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet, law enforcement agencies would soon find those who had ordered this high-profile crime.
During an emergency briefing at the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the participation of the Head of State, Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov and Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Riaboshapka, representatives of the National Police reported about the detention of five people reasonably suspected of killing journalist Pavel Sheremet in the summer of 2016.
The investigation considered four versions of the crime: murder by mistake as regards the victim, domestic conflict, professional activity of the journalist, including abroad, as well as destabilization of the socio-political situation in the country by killing a public figure – and stopped on the latter.
After hearing the information of the law enforcers, the President noted that he was overwhelmed with emotions. He recalled that he had met with law enforcement officials a few months ago and stressed that the criminal case of the murder of Pavel Sheremet was one of the priorities and should be solved.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the investigators and prosecutors, the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General for their work.
"Alleged killers were detained today. We received a lot of answers - you saw it yourself. But there is another question - who is the hirer. I am sure that this question will surely be answered next time. I want to believe that this will be the third and the final meeting on this high-profile case concerning the murder of Pavel Sheremet,” the President said.
The Head of State added that, unfortunately, there were many similar cases in Ukraine. However, he is convinced that intense cooperation between the law enforcement agencies should be continued to bring criminals to justice.
"This is the answer why we all work together," Volodymyr Zelenskyy summed up.
