President: No one understands how severe COVID-19 is until a loved one falls ill

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasizes that the number of patients with coronavirus infection in Ukraine has exceeded 2,000 per day, and urges Ukrainians to avoid crowds and not to neglect security measures, including wearing masks. The Head of State told that during communication with representatives of mass media in the Mykolaiv region.

The President noted that his wife and son had fallen ill with COVID-19.

"Children come through the illness more or less normally, but it is very hard for adults. Even those adults who are, so to speak, young and healthy, who do sports. That is why I wish everyone good health and I ask everyone to be careful,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

He pointed out that people mostly stopped following quarantine measures.

"No one is afraid of anything. But believe me and our family - no one is afraid until someone near you gets sick," Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.

The Head of State noted that over the past 24 hours, more than 2,100 new patients with COVID-19 have been detected in Ukraine.

"We are already on the wave of two thousand infections. It is very dangerous," he stressed.

Therefore, the President called on citizens to adhere to personal protection measures and avoid crowds.

"Now it all depends on the people - wear masks and just be careful. With all due respect to all people, to the faithful, please be careful in the churches. At weddings, please be careful. Wherever there is a large crowd of people… Until a relative gets sick, no one understands how difficult it is to endure, how difficult it is for our medicine,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The President added that the increase in the number of patients with coronavirus infection will require the increase in the number of beds in the infectious diseases departments of hospitals.

Regarding the creation of the vaccine, the Head of State stressed that at the beginning of the pandemic Ukraine could not technically develop it. However, the Ministry of Health and the Prime Minister are now gathering scientists to create a separate special center, where the best specialists in the country will work to ensure that we are ready for any challenges in the future.

"The global issue is about science, about medicine, about the development of vaccines for the future, so this task has already been set," the President said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine is ready to provide its production capacity for the production of the vaccine against coronavirus infection if it is recognized by the international expert community.

"Now we already have several companies that are ready for mass production. And we are negotiating with some countries - vaccine developers that if we manage to get the vaccine from this or that country, we are ready to mass produce it, helping other countries, and above all - Ukrainians," the President noted.
