In order to achieve a just and lasting peace, European countries must strengthen their defense capabilities, pursue a coordinated foreign policy and, together with the United States, provide Ukraine with effective security guarantees. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his speech at the main session of the Munich Security Conference.
“Many leaders have talked about Europe that needs its own military, army – an Army of Europe. And I really believe that the time has come. The Armed Forces of Europe must be created. This is not harder than standing firm against Russian attacks, as we have already done,” he said.
According to the President, Europe needs a single voice, not a dozen different ones. That is why there should be coordinated diplomacy and a unified foreign policy. Particularly, regarding the just end of the war.
“Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement. And the same rule should apply to all of Europe. No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine. No decisions about Europe without Europe. Europe must have a seat at the table when decisions about Europe are being made,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized.
The Head of State expressed confidence that Russia does not want peace. This year, Moscow plans to create 15 new divisions, increasing the number of soldiers to 150 thousand. That is why, even after the end of the war, Ukraine needs reliable security guarantees. They will only be strong if the United States participates, and Europe takes a proactive stance.
“Some say that the New Year comes not on January 1 but with the Munich Security Conference. This new year starts now, and let it be the year of Europe – united, strong, secure and in peace,” the Head of State concluded.
