Start of EU Accession Negotiations and Support for Ukraine: Volodymyr Zelenskyy Met with Charles Michel

During his working visit to Brussels to participate in a meeting of the European Council, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President of the European Council Charles Michel.

The Head of State thanked Charles Michel and all the EU member states for the actual start of Ukraine's EU accession negotiations and emphasized that Ukrainians had been waiting for it for a long time.

"Everyone, both civilians and, of course, our heroes on the battlefield, you know how much we want to be in the EU. Now we see this strong historical step forward. Of course, we need to work on the next steps. You always say that we are rushing too much, but it is necessary," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Head of State noted the approval of the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, in particular, the extension of sanctions to Belarus for its participation in the war against Ukraine.

The President also thanked Charles Michel for his comprehensive support of the Peace Formula and assistance in engaging more countries in the first Peace Summit.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Charles Michel discussed the key priorities of relations between Ukraine and the EU in the near future, especially after the start of accession negotiations.

The President of the European Council assured that the EU will continue to support Ukraine, including by increasing military and financial assistance. Together with G7 partners, they are working to provide Ukraine with an additional €50 billion package.

"It's really important to send a signal that we are not intimidated by Russia, that we are absolutely motivated and determined. Because we know that if Ukrainians are fighting to protect their future, the future of their children, if you are fighting to protect your land, we are also fighting to protect our shared values," the President of the European Council emphasized.
