Negotiations in the Normandy format should be held as soon as possible - President of Ukraine

During a briefing in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the issue of ending the war and establishing peace in Donbas was a priority for him.

The Head of State stressed that it had been initially planned to hold a meeting in the Normandy format after the parliamentary elections. "But I really want this meeting to take place urgently. The first working meeting (meeting of foreign policy advisers on preparation - ed.) is scheduled for July already," the President noted.

For her part, the Federal Chancellor of Germany underscored the support for Ukraine.

According to Angela Merkel, during a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the parties had discussed the Minsk process, which provided framework conditions for the preservation of the integrity and independence of Ukraine.

The German Chancellor noted that sanctions against Russia would be mitigated only in case of progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

"During a meeting, the President stated that he wanted to improve the humanitarian conditions for the people living in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and it should take place in the framework of the Minsk process," Angela Merkel said.

She announced a meeting of representatives in the Minsk format and stressed that Germany would make efforts in that direction.

Angela Merkel also expressed content with the fact that the Trilateral Contact Group has resumed its work.

"I can wish the President successful steps in this regard for Ukraine to continue to follow this path," the Federal Chancellor concluded.
