President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent in Kyiv. This is Scott Bessent's first official visit in his current role; it is also the first visit to Ukraine by a representative of U.S. President Donald Trump's team.
The Head of State thanked the United States and the American people for their assistance and bipartisan support to Ukrainians since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
The President emphasized Ukraine's readiness to work with Donald Trump's administration to implement the “peace through strength” approach. A just and lasting peace requires real security guarantees for Ukraine.
“I am grateful to the President for his messages that he will support Ukraine and that he really wants to stop this war. And I know that he is a strong man, and I am confident that he will push Putin,” the Head of State said.
During the meeting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Scott Bessent discussed Ukraine's resource potential and economic security guarantees for Ukrainians. In particular, they addressed the preparation of a document on economic partnership between Ukraine and the United States.
“We will review this document and do our best to ensure that our teams reach agreement very quickly. We are eager to do so because the United States is our strategic partner. We will do everything to go over all the details,” the President emphasized.
According to Scott Bessent, this agreement should serve as an important signal of support for Ukraine from the United States.
“I believe this document is important from President Trump's perspective in resolving this conflict as soon as possible. We will provide guarantees of American assistance to the people of Ukraine. I believe this is a very strong signal to Russia about our intentions,” he stated.
In addition, they spoke about strengthening sanctions against the Russian Federation and utilizing frozen Russian assets.
