First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska delivered a video address to the guests of the Polish National Opera, where the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra's concert took place.
The event was dedicated to the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
“The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra has become another response to Russia's attempts to destroy not only Ukraine but also our culture. In times when dozens of performers and artists have already been killed by Russian bombs and missiles, it is our duty to ensure that their life's work lives on. Moreover, it is our responsibility to make the language of culture and art louder than Russian guns. I consider it an honor to be the patron of this orchestra,” Olena Zelenska emphasized.
The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra was founded in February 2022 by Canadian conductor of Ukrainian descent Keri-Lynn Wilson, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera, the Polish National Opera, and the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. Since then, the ensemble has made three tours of the most renowned concert halls in Europe and the United States.
“Today Beethoven's Ode to Joy was performed. It is the anthem of the European Union. However, there was a slight change – the performers replaced the word “joy” with “glory”. So, glory to all those who are now fighting for life and freedom for everyone. Glory to Ukraine!” the First Lady concluded.
