We Need a United European Security and Defense Policy – President at the Forum in Davos

Europe must maintain unity, increase defense spending, ensure energy independence and be able to guarantee security. This was stated by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his speech to the participants of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Head of State noted that even though Russia’s overall economic potential is way smaller than Europe’s, the Russian Federation produces several times more ammo and military equipment than all of Europe combined. In addition, Russia is increasing its cooperation with Iran and North Korea. That is why it is vital to maintain unity in Europe.

“We need a united European security and defense policy, and all European countries must be willing to spend as much on security as is truly needed, not just as much as they’ve gotten used to during years of neglect. If it takes 5% of GDP to cover defense, then so be it, 5% it is,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The President emphasized that Ukraine had set up models of defense cooperation that can make all of Europe stronger. This refers to the joint production of artillery and drones, including unique ones that have no analogues in the world. In addition, the Head of State called for joint production of air defense systems capable of intercepting all types of cruise and ballistic missiles.

“Europe needs its own version of Iron Dome, something that can deal with any kind of threat. We can’t rely on goodwill from a few capitals when it comes to Europe’s security,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

He also stressed that no European country should be dependent on a single energy supplier, especially on Russia, and the policy of U.S. President Donald Trump could help in this regard. Moreover, the Head of State noted that Europe must be able to guarantee peace and security for itself and for others.

“Europe deserves to be strong. And for this, Europe needs the EU and NATO. Is this possible without Ukraine and without a just end to Russia’s war against Ukraine? I’m certain the answer is no. Only real security guarantees for us will serve as real security guarantees for everyone in Europe. And we must ensure that America also sees us as essential,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded.
