International Register of Damage for Ukraine Has Opened a Second Category – Death of an Immediate Family Member

16 January 2025 - 11:01

The Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has started accepting claims for another category – the death of an immediate family member.

Close relatives of the deceased person or other family members who have legal grounds and can confirm this can submit a claim through the Diia web portal.

The category applies not only to those who died on Ukrainian territory since February 24, 2022, but also to those who died outside the country if it was a result of Russian aggression.

The first category, for which claims were accepted starting last April, was damage or destruction of housing. Work is underway to open the remaining categories.

In total, the Register will accept claims for more than 40 categories of damage. These include deaths, torture, sexual violence, bodily harm, forced displacement and resettlement, loss of property and income, damage to critical infrastructure and other government facilities, and damage to historical and cultural heritage and the environment.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President Iryna Mudra emphasized that the international compensation mechanism is one of the key priorities of the seventh point of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Peace Formula.

“Today we have finally achieved an important result, which we have been working on since the first days of the full-scale invasion. During this time, we have done significant legal, diplomatic and political work. And although we are only at the beginning of our path to restoring justice for Ukrainians, we are convinced that together we will be able to achieve it,” Iryna Mudra concluded.
