The Ukrainian authorities want to hold local elections throughout Ukraine, including certain areas of Donbas in October 2020, however security and political conditions must be created for this, as stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“The people of Donbas need elections that will be recognized by Ukraine and the world as legitimate. And they cannot be so if they are conducted not under Ukrainian law, with the sounds of gunfire and without control over our border,” the Head of State noted during his speech at the Munich Security Conference.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the Russian party openly informed the world that in 2019, 125 thousand Russian passports had been issued in the temporarily uncontrolled parts of Donbas.
According to the Head of State, holding local elections in Donbas is impossible without adherence to basic security and political conditions, the Constitution of Ukraine and international standards of democratic elections.
